Doctor Who Season 7 Finale

Spoilers ahead, sweeties.

It is with a heavy heart that I say this, but here it goes: Doctor Who is not what it used to be.

I miss the feel of the old seasons. Clara just doesn't have the personality of any of the previous companions. She's got spunk, but she's got nothing on Amy. She talks back a bit, but she's no Donna. At times it seems she has a thing for the Doctor, but can you have a better unrequited love story than Martha's? The Doctor cares about her, but nothing like he did for Rose. What are we left with? A companion that is merely okay.

Her one redeeming quality was the question surrounding her. I actually loved how the mystery unraveled, when it turned out she had jumped into the Doctor's timeline. Magnificent. The scene was wonderfully moving. If Clara made this sacrifice, I could appreciate her character so much more. She would be the Doctor's hero, something other companions haven't been.

It should have ended there, with Clara's sacrifice, which could have been on par with moving scenes from the previous series, almost as good as Rose disappearing into the other universe or Donna losing her memory. But then what happens?

The Doctor jumps into his own timeline and saves her. What? What!? WHAT?

Did he not JUST explain that his grave was the most dangerous place he could be and he should never EVER do that because of timey-wimey ripping holes in the universe causing paradox type problems??

Nope, it's all good. He just jumps in there and brings her back. Cue appearance of new, mysterious Doctor (you didn't actually have to spell that out for us with the big shiny letters, by the way, Moffat), and end scene.

Blah.

I did like the appearances of past Doctors in this episode. I did like the conclusion of River Song's story (she was always one of my favourites). But still. This finale, and this whole season, was lacking the emotional impact of Tennant's days, and even the early Smith days.

So there you have my rant. I will keep watching new episodes of Doctor Who, but sadly, without the enthusiasm I used to have for this beloved show, and with the hope that it will redeem itself.

Doctor Who Season 7.5

Who's been keeping up with the new season of Doctor Who, and what are you thoughts? What do you think of Clara, the new companion?

I've been enjoying them, but not as much as the last seasons. For me, Clara lacks the interesting personalities of the previous companions. She's got spunk and she's pretty, but so far that's all there's been to her character. I am interested to see her mystery solved, though.

My favourite episode this second half of the season was "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS," where we finally get to see more of the Doctor's beloved ship. It made me happy that we caught a glimpse of the pool and the library. I've always enjoyed the fact that she's somewhat of a living thing.

Looking forward to the finale that airs tonight! It is called "The Name of the Doctor," so that bodes interesting. Plus, you can catch a glimpse of River Song in the trailer; she's my favourite and has been conspicuously missing from this half of the season.

Also in my list of top three TV shows? You guessed it.

I love how even with each change, the Doctor is so excited to show his companions wondrous sights. He never gets bored with the amazing universe, even though it's constantly throwing terrible things at him.

My Doctor will always be David Tennant, the tenth doctor. His quirky personality is my favourite. I like the different relationships he has with each of his companions. I appreciate how he can be funny and light-hearted in one moment, and serious in the next. At times there's this look in his eyes that makes me believe he really is hundreds of years old--that he's suffered and loved and lived for that long.

Even though he wasn't ginger, he was great.

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2012 Trailer

I am taking a break from furiously working on my NaNo project to bring you this trailer:

Who's excited for the Christmas special and looking forward to meeting the new companion? Who was sad to see Amy and Rory go? I'll admit, I wasn't a fan of Amy at the very beginning, but she grew on me and I absolutely loved Rory. They will be missed. The new companion looks like she's got a lot of spunk, though, and I'm looking forward to how she's connected to the character who died from the first episode of the season.

Fall 2012 TV Shows

These are the shows airing this fall that I am looking forward to watching or have already started watching. I'm not sure if I will have time to catch all of them. What shows will you be keeping up with this fall?

Doctor Who -- Season 7 started Saturday, September 1
I will be sad to see Rory and Amy go.

Revolution -- Season 1 started Monday, September 17
Interesting premise for a new show by J.J. Abrams. I will give it a try!

The Big Bang Theory -- Season 6 started Thursday, September 27
While the first seasons are still the best, I will be keeping up with the geeks in this show.

Fringe -- Season 5 starts Friday, September 28 (today!)
I am a little wary about how the final season of Fringe will turn out. The episodes have been getting a little weird, but I still really enjoyed Season 4. I don't like that there is no sign of Olivia in these trailers. Who wants to watch Fringe without Olivia? I'm sure she will turn up, but I hope they don't leave her out of many episodes.

Once Upon a Time -- Season 2 starts Sunday, September 30
Season 1 ended with magic entering the world. I am curious to see what will happen next!

Merlin -- Season 5 starts Saturday, October 6
Things have definitely changed throughout this series. Arthur is king, Guinevere queen. The knights of the round table are forming. Please let Arthur find out that Merlin is a wizard in this season, that's all I have to say.

Doctor Who's New Companion

The companion for the next series has finally been revealed! Jenna-Louise Coleman, actress from Waterloo Road, Emmerdale Farm, and Captain America, is stepping up to the plate. Of these productions she's been involved in I've only seen Captain America, and I don't really remember her in it, so I don't know her very well. It sounds like she will be a good match for Matt Smith though, as producer Moffat commented: "when we saw Matt and Jenna together, we knew we had our girl. She's funny and clever and exactly mad enough to step on board the Tardis." You can read a longer article here.

Jenna will be replacing companions Karen Gillan in her role as Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill as Rory Williams. I've never been much of a fan of Amy, so I won't miss her very much, but Rory REALLY grew on me, and now he is one of my favourite characters. He started out as a character I thought would just show up for a few episodes and then disappear, but he ended up becoming an integral part of the show and I will miss him.

So will Jenna be able to fill the holes of the past awesome companions? I don't think so, but I think she will carve out a space of her own, and am looking forward to watching the chemistry between her and the Doctor. What do you think? TOP 10 TV Countdown - #1: DOCTOR WHO

You guessed it. Doctor Who gets the number 1 spot in my countdown, for oh so many reasons.

If you are not familiar with the show, Doctor Who is about a time traveler who calls himself the Doctor. He travels to different planets and times in his time machine/spaceship called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), watching over the time vortex and saving worlds from disaster. In his travels he has made great friends and great enemies. Though he doesn't look it, he is very old. He is also very lonely, so he brings along companions to travel with him.

I am a relatively new Doctor Who fan. I started watching the new series (the 9th Doctor) with my dad when I was still in high school and it was airing on CBC. I had never heard of the show before. I was immediately captivated by the wonderful story lines, the loveable characters, the terrifying villains, and the mysterious Doctor.

Time travel is difficult to do well, but I assert that Doctor Who does do it well. A whole race of extinct time lords whose job was to watch over the time vortex is an intriguing idea. That the Doctor is the last surviving member of this race makes him all the more special.

I love that the Doctor can regenerate. This is a neat trick thought up by the show's creators that allows it to last for years and years, as Doctor Who doesn't rely on a sole actor to carry it. Though I was a little sad about this with the passing of the 10th Doctor, who has been my favourite so far. I am enjoying the twists and turns of the new series, the Doctor's quirkiness, Amy's brashness and Rory's awesomeness, but I still miss the flavour of series 1-4, which was very different. Oh well, that's what DVD re-watching is for.
